Policy #821.1 - Student Selection of Food Items

Milk and the main dish must be selected items.

The teacher of students in grades K-6 may request that students try a reduced portion of other foods as part of their nutritional education program.

Grades 9-12 - Students in grades 9-12 may select three (3) food items with full-sized portions from the list of five (5) items served. Additional items selected may be served in reduced portions, if requested by the student.

Policy 822.1 - Child Nutrition and Wellness

The Midvale School District understands the important role nutrition plays in healthy life-style choices and in the educational process. The Superintendent or designee is authorized and directed to develop and implement an efficient and effective nutrition program for the students and employees of the District that is in compliance with state and federal regulations, this policy, and sound nutritional practices.

Mission: to encourage students to adopt a life-long healthy life style through education and modeling good eating and exercise habits.

Goal: Adopt policies, procedures, and curriculums that teach students good eating and exercising habits by offering choices in food and beverages on campus that meet dietary guidelines set forth by State and Federal agencies.

Regular Menu Planning: Midvale Schools will continue to support Federal USDA guidelines for lunches and breakfasts. This includes: guidelines for reimbursable lunches and breakfasts, nutrition guidelines, breakfast programs, and nutritional snacks and beverages offered for elementary snacks, after-school snacks, snacks for testing days and other programs deemed necessary for nutrition and good academic performance.

Breakfast and Lunch Times: Midvale Schools will continue to offer adequate time for eating, a good environment that is clean and conducive to eating and socializing, and insure that all lunch and breakfast programs are available to all students.

Vending Machines: Midvale Schools will continue to work with vendors to provide choices and selection for healthy food and beverages in their machines. All vendors will be asked to work with the Midvale School District in reaching these goals. Vending contracts in effect at the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year shall be honored, but renegotiated where possible to comply with this policy. Additional vending machines will only contain those snacks and beverages that meet guidelines for healthy and nutritional items.

Elementary School: Vending machines and competitive day-time sales are not allowed in the elementary school.

Secondary School: Secondary schools may operate vending machines and competitive day-time sales under the following guidelines:

Concessions Stand: The concessions for extra-curricular activities will endeavor to offer healthy food selections, such as fresh fruit, when possible.

Wellness and Physical Education for Students, Parents, and Staff:

Wellness education (nutrition, fitness, safety, physical and emotional health) is to be included through the normal curriculum adoption process in each elementary grade, secondary health classes, elementary physical education (PE), secondary PE, Family and Consumer Science, and appropriately integrated into other courses.

Midvale Schools will continue to support fitness by offering regular PE programs in grades K-12. In addition to regular PE, students on the secondary level are offered a variety of extra-curricular programs, and participation will continue to be encouraged for all.

The District will make available information that encourages parents to provide their children with nutritious foods, regular exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices.

Food service staff will receive training in Wellness and Fitness Issues and will aid classroom teachers in providing their expertise in instruction and awareness in promoting nutrition and fitness. In addition, food personnel will provide information in a variety of ways to encourage not only students, but staff as well, to follow good nutritional and fitness habits and model their behaviors in their classrooms and activities.

Monitoring and Compliance: Midvale School District administration will convene with a committee each year to review and revise the Child Nutrition and Wellness policy. This committee should be comprised of parents, patrons, students, school board, staff, and administration as well as those individuals deemed to be involved with school nutrition and fitness.
